Frequently Asked
Questions

1. How long do synthetic dreadlock extensions last?

With proper care and gentle handling, your dreads can last as long as you want them to. Since they are made from synthetic fibers, that do not break down the same way natural hair does. One set can last months - years.

You may want to change them out sooner; if you want to change out the colors though.

** Curly dreads don't act the same and are more delicate. These may need to be replaced more often.

2. How long can I wear them at one time?

You can wear your dreads for roughly 4 -8 weeks at a time, before needing to remove them, and reinstall. It really depends on your lifestyle, how fast your hair grows, and how well you installed them initially.

3. Do dreadlock extensions damage your hair?

For most, no. not at all. they are a protective style and meant to support hair growth because you don't need to use heat to style them, or chemicals such as hair dyes or bleach to change your hair color. With proper installation, and maintenance, you should not experience hair damage.

It is important to note your own hair density and condition before installing, making sure your dreads are an appropriate length and weight if you have thinner hair.

Use your own discretion, but feel free to reach out to us at dreadedromance@gmail.com if you have any questions in regards to this.

4. Can I install them myself?

Yes! IF you can do a simple braid, you can install them yourself. Whether you have Single-ended (SE) or Double-ended (DE) dreadlocks, you simply section our the hair you want, split it in two and use the dreadlock as the third strand. Take a look at our install guide for further clarification.

If you are not able, or comfortable installing them yourself, you can take them to your hairstylist and they should be able to do an install for you.

5. What’s the difference between double-ended (DE) and single-ended (SE) dreads?

Double-Ended (DE): One long strand folded in the middle (or offset) and braided in, giving 2 strands per section—ideal for volume and full installs.
-essentially a two for one, as you will end up with two dreads in your hair.

Example: 60 DE dreadlocks for a full head will give you 120 dreads

Single-Ended (SE): Have a loop at the top for easy attachment—great for sensitive scalps or partial installs

Example: 60 sE dreadlocks for an install will give you 60 dreads, and may not cover your whole head.

6. Can I wash my hair with them in?

Yes, but gently! You want to gently cleanse the scalp, and can wash the ends of the dreads as well. They will get kind of heavy with the water so parting it in half and washing it one section at a time may help with the weight when they are wet.

however, they don't retain moisture like regular hair, so they do dry fairly quick. You can even blow dry them on low heat to speed up the already quick drying process.

** DO NOT USE CONDITIONER, it will cause build up in the dreads and they won't last.

To deep clean the dreads, after they've been removed soak them in warm water, and shampoo for 15- 20 minutes, squeezing them occasionally. and then rinse until water runs clear.

7. Can I sleep with them in?

Yes! They are very comfortable to sleep in. we recommend tying them up in a bun, or braid to sleep in. You can use a silk/satin bonnet for extra protection but its not totally necessary.

8. What are they made of?

All Dreaded Romance extensions are handcrafted from high-quality PET (polyethylene terephthalate) fibers—a safer, cleaner alternative to traditional synthetic options like kanekalon.

Our fibers are:

  • - Non-toxic and non-carcinogenic

  • - non-chemically coated

  • - Free of lead, cadmium, and other micro-metals

  • - Safe for long-term wear

  • - Lightweight, breathable, and gentle on the scalp

  • - Washable and irritation-free

  •

Unlike kanekalon—one of the most common fibers used for synthetic dreadlocks—our PET fibers are free from harsh chemical coatings and flame-retardant additives, which are often linked to skin irritation and long-term health concerns. We use PET because it’s not only safer for the body but also more comfortable and durable for extended wear.

We believe your protective style should protect you, too. That’s why we craft with intention—from the inside out.

9. How many dreads do I need?

First, consider if you want a full head, half head, or accent pieces. and how much hair you have/ desired fullness, and whether you are installing double-ended or single-ended; or both.

For Double-ended

  • Full head: 45-65 dreads (9-13 packs)

  • Half head: 20-40 dreads (4-8 packs)

  • Accent peek-a-boos: 5- 15 dreads (1-3 packs)

for single ended you may need to double the amount of dreads ordered.
personally, I think single ended dreads are best used as accent pieces, or around the hair line, but do what feels right to you. Double-ended are my personal favorite.

10. Can I use heat on them?

Yes, while- the material we use is heat resistant; and can be styled with heat tools, A low heat will style them just fine. you want to make sure you do not exceed heat higher than 350 degrees.

KEEP AWAY FROM OPEN FLAMES.

We are also not responsible for any damage done by attempting to heat style them yourself.  They do hold their styling very well and using heat on certain dreads may end in the dreads unraveling, or losing their shape.
